The Kraft Mountain Loop, also called Gateway Canyon Loop, is a 3.1-mile loop that circumnavigates Kraft Mountain (Peak 4714ft), which borders the north side of Calico Basin. We start out by hiking on an easy flat maintained trail that enters the La Madre Mountain Wilderness Area. The trail runs up steep slopes to a saddle with great views in a tongue of gray limestone, then drops into Gateway Canyon. Following Gateway Wash, the route passes a few spots of easy rock scrambling and seasonal pools of water as it runs down to the mouth of the canyon. The trail then circles back across desert flats to the trailhead. We will keep an eye out for ample desert wildlife and critters, geological wonders and cool petroglyphs on this route. We might even come across the elusive Mojave Desert Tortoise and/or Gila Monster!
